For many students applying to medical school can be a daunting process and often one in which potential applicants feel they need some additional support. One way of learning more about what it takes and how to get there is to join a pre-medical club or society. At the University of Toronto, there are student-run pre-medical clubs on all three campuses: Scarborough (UTSC), St. George (UTSG) and Mississauga (UTM). All of these clubs offer resources to prospective students considering applying to medical programs.
The ethos of each club is broadly similar in that they aim to be supportive and non-competitive with a mutual goal among members to disseminate information and guidance to students interested in pursuing medical school through formal and informal events.
At U of T, the various pre-medical clubs provide U of T students with multiple opportunities to network with other prospective medical students, access engaged medical faculty members, take a mock MCAT and undertake the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)/Multiple Personal Interview (MPI) practice interviews. Clubs may also offer academic advising, guidance on how to enhance your MD application, Doctor for a Day experiences, medical skills workshops as well as health and medicine career fairs. In spring, there is also a large tri-campus pre-medical social, called PULSE, which this year raised funds for youth mental health organization, Oolagen.
There are a variety of health-related clubs and societies on all three campuses but three active pre-medical clubs are:
