Over 70 students revealed their singing, dancing, acting and musical talents in the recent production of the Devil Wears Scrubs, a musical production in support of the Canadian Cancer Society from February 17 - 20, 2016.

“In addition to a great opportunity to meet people and make new friends, participation in the Daffydil production provided students with a creative outlet and helped the audience – including our friends and family – understand what it’s like to be a medical student,” says Stephanie Zhou, 1T8 student who co-produced the production with 1T8 student Erin Helson.

The all student band performsAll songs were composed and performed by 1T8 and 1T9 med students as well as Speech Language Pathology and Physical Therapy students. The script, also written by students, was a reflection of their experiences as medical students.

In a parody on the 2006 comedy, the Devil Wears Prada, the theme of the production focused on avoiding burnout and the mentor-mentee relationship in clerkship. Through a comedic approach, students tackled serious issues that struck a chord with audiences.

“This year’s Daffydil production tackled so many critical issues in physicians’ education, and did so in a nuanced, balanced and ethical fashion,” stated Dr. Jay Rosenfield, Vice Dean, MD Program as he congratulated the cast and crew following the opening night performance.  “The show conveyed such a wonderful message about our future health professionals’ values.”

With the support friends, family, alumni, the Office of Health Professions Student Affairs (OHPSA) and title sponsors Toronto Notes and Moakler Wealth Management, Daffydil 2016 surpassed both ticket sale and fundraising goals.

Daffydil is among the oldest traditions of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine. It draws upon the creative talents of students in the faculty and channels it towards supporting the search for more advanced treatments and medical care for those affected by cancer through the Canadian Cancer Society.

Reflecting on the opportunity to express creativity, Claudia Dziegielewski 1T9 student and Daffydil cast member discussed her love of performing. “Dancing on stage fulfills and captivates me more than anything else. Best of all, there’s the thrill and excitement, the blinding lights, the cheering audience, the racing of your heartbeat. You feel totally alive. And the most amazing times on stage have been when I am completely lost in the dance.”
