MD/PhD Program Stipends
*Updated on August 19, 2025 for the 2025-26 Academic Year*
In general, provided that the student remains “in good standing”, MD/PhD students receive financial support, starting September of their first-year and continuing until graduation.
Important: Stipends do not directly cover tuition fees. Students are responsible for paying tuition fees independently.
Stipend Structure by Phase of Study
During MD Studies
- The MD/PhD Program provides a stipend based on the student’s year of entry.
- Minimum annual stipend includes:
- Domestic tuition and incidental fees (based on entry year)
- A living allowance (see table below)
During PhD Studies
- Stipend support is shared between the graduate supervisor and the MD/PhD Program.
- Graduate supervisors are responsible for providing the minimum living allowance set by their academic unit (currently $21,000).
- The MD/PhD Program covers tuition and incidental fees.
This ensures MD/PhD students receive the same living allowance as their peers in the same graduate unit.
Tuition Information
Tuition is based on the student’s year of entry into the MD/PhD Program. To find the current MD/PhD tuition schedule visit the Tuition Fees & Schedules webpage

Final Year Clerkship Stipend
The “Final Year Clerkship Stipend” provided by the Ministry of Health is considered part of the 4th-year MD/PhD stipend. Students are paid from September to June in their final year.
International Students
International students are eligible for the MD/PhD Program and receive the same funding package as domestic students, based on domestic tuition rates. However, they are responsible for paying international tuition fees.

Award Top-Ups and Adjustments
MD/PhD stipend top-ups follow the Temerty Medicine Harmonized Student Stipend Agreement. Key points:
- Awards over $2,000 are first applied to the supervisor’s portion of the stipend.
- If the award exceeds the supervisor’s contribution, the remainder is applied to the MD/PhD portion.
- Students receiving awards that exceed the base stipend + max top-up ($4,000) are not eligible for additional top-up.
- All awards must be reported to the MD/PhD Office. Failure to report may result in loss of stipend.
- Bursaries do not need to be reported.
Award Adjustment Table
|
Award Amount |
Top-Up |
|---|---|
|
$0.00 to $2,000 |
There will be no top-up, but the student gets to keep the award(s), up to a combined maximum of $2,000. The amount of the award will not be deducted from the base funding. |
|
Between $2,001 to $9,999 (cumulative awards) |
Award goes towards the base funding and the student receives a $2,000 top-up over their base funding. |
|
Between $10,000 to $15,000 (cumulative awards) |
Award goes towards the base funding and the student receives a $3,000 top-up over their base funding. |
|
Between $15,001 to $49,999 (cumulative awards) |
Award goes towards the base funding and the student receives a $4,000 top-up over their base funding. |
|
$50,000+ (cumulative awards) |
Award goes towards the base funding and the student receives a $4,000 top-up over their base funding paid by their supervisor. Additionally, the MD/PhD Program contributes a supplementary top-up to ensure the student receives the same financial benefit as non-MD/PhD Vanier recipients. |
These stipend and award practices reflect the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s commitment to equitable funding for MD/PhD students and aligns with the Harmonized Base Funding Agreement standards.
