Integrated Physician Scientist Training Programs

What Is the Integrated Physician Scientist Training Pathway?

The Integrated Physician Scientist Training Pathway (IPSTP) is not a single program, but a structured framework that aligns and integrates several physician‑scientist training options at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. Designed to reflect the diversity of learner interests, career goals, and training timelines, the IPSTP offers multiple research “on‑ramps”—from short‑term research experiences to formal graduate‑level credentials—within a coordinated and well‑supported ecosystem.

The pathway is designed to:

  • Enable earlier and more meaningful engagement in research
  • Support flexible entry points at different stages of training
  • Reduce administrative barriers between MD, graduate, and post‑graduate education
  • Prepare trainees for academic, investigator‑led, and translational careers

Trainees may enter the pathway during medical school and continue through residency and fellowship, selecting the training option that best aligns with their evolving goals.
