Applying for the Summer Mentorship Program
How to apply
Please complete the online application to apply to the 2020 Summer Mentorship Program. Please note that you must be 16 by June 30, 2020 to be eligible for this program. You earn a high school credit (GLN40) for Navigating the Workplace if you successfully complete the SMP. To begin the application you'll need to connect with your Guidance office so that you can get a copy of your transcript. The transcript is attached directly to the application in PDF or JPEG format. A credit counselling summary/high school status sheet is the only accepted alternative to providing your transcript. Your Provincial Report Card will not be accepted as a substitute for your transcript.
In the online application you'll be asked to provide your name, your gender, your contact information, the contact information for your Guidance Counsellor/Teacher, the contact information for your parent/guardian, and emergency contact information. To complete the application you’ll be asked to provide a statement of interest that explains "what makes you a good candidate for the Summer Mentorship Program." The statement of interest requires some reflection. You are encouraged to write your answer to this question in advance and then cut and paste it into the application form to avoid any disruptions to the application process.
The SMP has had more than 1000 students complete the program over the last 25 years - and many of those students have since entered professional faculties and health care professions. The SMP continues to create learning environments that are safe and equitable for Black and Indigenous students. In an effort to further address the underrepresentation of Black men & Indigenous peoples in the health sciences, we highly encourage these two groups to apply to the program.
The deadline for the SMP is March 23, 2020 — but, since space is limited, please apply early. If you complete and submit the application by January 20, 2020 you will be invited for an interview in early February and successful applicants will receive an early admission offer for the SMP.
